Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Australia SkillSelect, EOI data, and how to use this tracker.
What is an Expression of Interest (EOI)?+
An Expression of Interest (EOI) is a profile you submit in the SkillSelect system to indicate your interest in applying for a skilled migration visa to Australia. It is not a visa application — it is step one. If selected, you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) and can then lodge the full visa application.
What is SkillSelect?+
SkillSelect is the Australian Government's online system for managing skilled migration applications. It allows you to submit an EOI and be ranked against other candidates. The Department of Home Affairs then selects the highest-ranked EOIs to receive invitations each month.
What is the difference between subclass 189, 190, and 491?+
Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) is a permanent visa that does not require state/territory nomination. Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated) is a permanent visa that requires a nomination from a state or territory government. Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional) is a temporary (5-year) regional visa that also requires nomination. After 3 years on a 491, you may be eligible for a permanent 191 visa.
How are EOIs ranked and selected?+
EOIs are ranked primarily by points score. If two EOIs have the same score, the one submitted earlier (date of effect) gets priority. In each invitation round, the Department invites the highest-ranked EOIs up to the number of available places.
What does "Waiting" mean in the data?+
"Waiting" refers to EOIs that have been submitted in SkillSelect but have not yet received an invitation. These are people in the queue, waiting to be selected in a future round.
What does "Invited" mean?+
"Invited" means the person received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for the visa. They now have 60 days to lodge their full visa application with all supporting documents.
What does "Lodged" mean?+
"Lodged" means the person accepted the invitation and submitted their complete visa application (including all documents and fees). The application is now being processed by the Department of Home Affairs.
How many points do I need to get an invitation?+
The minimum points required varies by visa subclass, occupation, and round. Historically, subclass 189 invitations have required 85–90+ points for most occupations. Subclass 190 and 491 often invite at lower thresholds (65–80 points) as state/territory nomination adds additional priority. Check the Rounds History page for recent trends.
How often are invitations issued?+
SkillSelect invitation rounds are held approximately once a month. The exact date varies but is usually mid-month. Some months may see multiple rounds or no rounds, depending on visa planning levels.
Is this data from the official government?+
The data presented on EOI Tracker is sourced from the official Department of Home Affairs SkillSelect dashboard. However, EOI Tracker is an independent site and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Australian Government. Always verify critical data directly on the official Department of Home Affairs website.
Why is my occupation not listed?+
We are continuously adding occupations. Currently, we show the most commonly tracked ANZSCO codes. If your occupation is missing, please contact us and we'll prioritise adding it.
Do I need to create an account to use this site?+
No. EOI Tracker is completely free to use with no account or sign-up required. All data is publicly accessible.
